Deeplish Community Welfare Advice Service supported a resident facing financial hardship and language barriers following the death of her husband.

The situation

After her husband’s death, a local resident experienced a sudden change in her financial circumstances.

Her husband’s benefit claims had ended, along with the Carer’s Allowance she had previously received for caring for him. With no income immediately available, she was relying on friends to help with everyday expenses.

She also faced difficulties accessing information because she could not speak or write in English.

How Deeplish helped

The Welfare Advice team provided language-sensitive support to help the resident understand her circumstances and the financial assistance that might be available.

Staff helped her complete and return forms requested by the Department for Work and Pensions and submit applications for Universal Credit, Bereavement Support Payment and Council Tax Support.

They also explained the possibility of applying for financial help towards funeral costs and the relevant eligibility requirements.

The difference made

The resident received support to navigate unfamiliar benefit processes at a particularly difficult time.

With practical assistance and clear explanations, she was able to make applications for financial support and better understand her entitlements.

This case highlights the value of accessible, culturally appropriate welfare advice for residents facing bereavement, financial hardship and language barriers.
