Deeplish Community Welfare Advice Service helped a local couple access additional support to manage their finances and everyday care needs.
The situation
An older couple approached Deeplish because rising living costs were placing increasing pressure on their finances.
One partner was living with significant health conditions that affected mobility and daily living, while the other provided care and support.
They wanted to understand whether additional benefits and assistance might be available.
How Deeplish helped
The Welfare Advice team reviewed their circumstances and helped them explore several forms of support.
An application for Attendance Allowance resulted in an award at the higher rate, recognising the resident’s care needs.
Deeplish also helped him apply for a Blue Badge, which was granted by Rochdale Council.
The team reviewed the couple’s potential entitlement to Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support, calculating the amounts they could claim and helping submit the relevant applications.
Advice was also provided about Carer’s Allowance and the potential impact of additional support on their Pension Credit entitlement.
The difference made
The successful Attendance Allowance and Blue Badge applications provided important financial and practical support.
The couple also received help to pursue other benefit entitlements, with advice that took account of their household circumstances and caring responsibilities.
Their experience demonstrates how detailed welfare advice can help residents access support, improve financial security and maintain greater independence.
